Our Calling

The Soul of the Matter...Why Ames Christian Exists

As a new institution, we receive questions all the time. The common:

"Are you accredited?"
"Are you pursuing accreditation?"
"Are you denominational?"
"Who are your faculty?"

We seek to provide answers by providing a FAQ page, doctrine statement, and operating code.

However, there is one question we get asked less often, but feel is just as important:

"In a world filled with Christian colleges and universities, why are you doing what you are doing?"

In other words, does the world really need another Christian university?

The direct answer to that question: Only God knows. Our destiny is in His hands.

But we believe He has called us to operate Ames Christian University at this time to fulfill specific purposes. Those purposes define our work. We believe God has called us to the following:

1.) To promote the Bible as the center of all learning.
As we view the landscape of higher education today, several disturbing trends appear. On secular campuses, humanism, political correctness and a corrosive intellectual climate devalue the educational process. Academic quality, long considered the finest in the world, has suffered greatly at the hands of social engineers.

Among Christian colleges, the trends are only rarely more promising. The lure of federal money and the cultural pressure to compromise have moved many once-strong Christian institutions far from their doctrine statements. Well-meaning administrators and isolated faculty members fight a lonely struggle against an encroaching ethic of conformity to societal expectations.

It is neither our place, nor our duty, to castigate our peers. It is our place and our duty, however, to fiercely adhere to our vision of the curriculum: We offer instruction which features the Bible at the center of every subject.

God's truth is not negotiable. His handiwork is visible in every discipline, in every area of study and, we hope, in every course we offer. We believe that a simple standard of integrity is the best guardian of our academic quality.

2.) To leverage the power of the Internet for worldwide education.
The Internet, as we often hear, is an incredible mechanism for evil. It is an almost friction-free system for distributing pornography, degradation, and vices of every kind. It seems that nothing is too bizarre or too sick to end up on the Internet.

However, the Internet is also an incredible mechanism for good. It connects people all over the world, keeping them in close touch and able to offer one another support. It provides information, ideas, and communication on an unprecedented scale.

One of the most powerful opportunities of the Internet Age is the ability to deliver education anywhere, to anyone with an Internet connection, at a reasonable cost. We believe this is our call.

Since our inception we have received a steady stream of inquiries and applications from learners in the developing world, especially Africa. As the gospel spreads across the planet, due to the work of generations of missionaries, a spark of hope has been lit among learners in the developing world.

We believe the spiritual revolution in the developing world will continue. We also believe material prosperity will follow that spiritual revival. And we believe education is the key to unlocking the promise of a better life for future generations all over the world.

These potential students have Internet access, a hunger to learn, and, usually, appropriate credentials. What they do not have is money, or much of it at least. We believe that we are called to provide education on a drastically cost-reduced basis, or on scholarship, to these learners.

The Internet makes it possible. We are willing. Our Ames Christian for Africa project is the first step in this new direction. We are offering disadvantaged learners in Africa the opportunity to pursue an Ames Christian degree at no cost.

This is literally an opportunity to change the world. If you are able, we ask you to consider partnering with us to provide scholarships to these learners. Please contact us for more details.

3.) To be a training center for the "new church."
We believe that God is doing a "new thing" in His church. (We also firmly believe that when He does a "new thing," He retains the "old things" that have worked so well for so many of His people.) Not  limited to new means of worship and new styles of services, we believe that He is empowering a generation for completely new outreaches and interpretations.

A new generation has arrived, raised on the Internet, PC games, and television for their stimulation, and secular humanism as their embedded "religion." They are risk-taking in their pursuits, relativistic in their decision making, and real in their every fiber. They do not intend to waste a minute of the time they are given on this planet.

We believe that God is meeting this generation right where they are. He is opening up doors to new versions of scripture, new interpretations of doctrine, and new practices of worship in spirit and truth.

Many of us in older generations may find these "new things" disconcerting because they are leaving behind our tightly held values. But it is precisely this process of stripping away everything manmade, everything made of intellectual plastic, that appeals to a generation that insists on being real.

Among the many traditions that this generation is influencing is the educational process. Many of them are choosing alternatives to the 12-4 system (12 years of public school, 4 years of college).

Many are home schooled, private schooled, charter or schooled. Many have worked since they were legally able. Many have entrepreneurial and innovative interests. Most have no patience for an educational process they consider irrelevant.

Many of this generation are doing something other than the 12-4 routine. They are attending nontraditional training programs. They are seeking off-campus learning. They are integrating their work with their schooling. They are putting off college. Or they are unable to afford it.

We believe that we are called to help this generation find answers. We believe that we must offer flexible, innovative options to this hungry, vibrant generation.

We believe that we are called to provide programming options that are relevant and offer the highest leverage for our learners. That is why we have launched an online digital media program, the Ames Media Institute. We believe an entrepreneurial generation with a heart to communicate will change the world through digital media. We are called to help.

Finally, we believe that we are called to move along side this new generation as it seeks its own set of doctrines and practices.

More evangelical? More liturgical? More practical?  More metaphorical, metaphysical, and metatranscendant? We do not know. But we believe God does. And He will give us and our students wisdom to define doctrinal and practical characteristics for worship in spirit, in truth, and in the now.

4.) To be responsive; to be direct; to be efficient.
We are an unaffiliated, nondenominational institution. We do not receive support from a government or denominational source. Yet our tuition is among the lowest of private US-based universities. This is because we keep our operating costs low and leverage the Internet for our students' benefit.

We believe that we can take college to the table tops of home schoolers, to the living rooms of busy professionals, and to the desktops of practicing ministry personnel.

We believe that we are called to help those who are drawn to us to finish their degrees. In higher education today, colleges and universities often invent bureaucratic systems that prevent students from finishing the very degrees they pursue.

Our systems help students finish degrees. That is our singular objective for each enrolled student.

We believe that we are called to a simple, unadorned efficiency. Our offices are comfortable, but not lavish. Our Web site is navigable and clear, but not sparkling. And our course delivery models are simple and straightforward, not technologically overwhelming.

An Invitation
We believe that we are called to be a new kind of college, one that operates as God desires. We invite you to join us.

If you believe God is calling you to join Ames Christian, we invite you to team with us. We believe that God sends us students who can benefit from our programs.

If you believe you are one of them, we invite you to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
